Jurisdiction

Pronounced:  jur-iss-DIK-shun

What it means: Jurisdiction means the court has the power to hear your case. You have to file in the right place (usually where you or your spouse live).

Example: “I couldn’t file in another state because the court didn’t have jurisdiction over our case.”

When it's used: At the beginning, when filing or if there’s a question about which court should handle things.
