Filing Fee

Pronounced: FYE-ling fee


What it means: The filing fee is the cost to officially file your divorce papers with the court. If you can’t afford it, you may be able to request a waiver.

Example: “I asked for a fee waiver because I couldn’t afford the $400 filing fee.”

When it's used: Right at the beginning, when the divorce paperwork is submitted.
