Judgment Notwithstanding the Verdict (JNOV)

Pronounced: JUHJ-ment not-with-STAND-ing the VER-dikt

What it means: This rare legal term means a judge changes the jury’s decision because they believe the jury got it wrong legally. It doesn’t come up in most divorces.

Example: “It was a JNOV ruling because the judge felt the jury ignored the law.”

When it's used: Very rarely—in high-conflict or trial-based divorces with unusual outcomes.
