What it means: Arbitration is a private way to settle a dispute outside of court, where a neutral person (called an arbitrator) makes a final decision after hearing both sides.

Example: “We used arbitration to settle who would keep the house, instead of going to court.”

When it's used: Sometimes instead of going to court, if both people agree to it.
