Using Puppets to Support Children in Navigating Divorce

by Daniel Rinaldi, therapist and life coach

Using puppets to communicate sensitive topics like divorce with children can be a gentle approach to a challenging conversation. Divorce can be an emotional time for children, and finding ways to help them understand and express their feelings is crucial for their emotional well-being. Puppets provide a unique way to facilitate this communication.

The Power of Puppets in Therapy

Puppets have been used in therapeutic settings for decades because they have a unique way of engaging children. They can transform a difficult conversation into a more manageable, playful interaction. This distance between the child, the puppet, and their emotions can provide comfort and safety, reducing the intimidation they might feel in adult conversations.

Why Use Puppets for Discussing Divorce?

  • Simplifies Complex Emotions: Divorce involves a range of emotions. Puppets can embody these complex feelings, presenting them in an understandable way to a child. A puppet might represent something that can help a child to identify their emotions.

  • Facilitates Open Communication: Children might feel pressured when speaking directly about their feelings. Puppets can act as a third party, encouraging kids to open up. They might tell a puppet something they wouldn't say directly to a parent.

  • Creates a Safe Space: Puppets create a playful and imaginative environment. This perceived play can make children feel safer and more willing to express complex emotions.

How to Implement Puppets into Discussions About Divorce

  • Choose the Right Puppet: Choose a puppet your child can relate to or feel comfortable with. It could be an animal, a fantastical creature, or even a human-like figure. The important part is that your child feels connected to it.

  • Set the Stage: Create a safe and engaging environment where the child feels at ease.
Start the Conversation: Begin with general topics to ease into the conversation. Let the child lead the conversations with their puppet and follow their cues. The puppet can ask the child how they feel about the changes in their family or what worries them the most.

  • Validate: Use the puppet to validate the child's feelings. If the child expresses sadness, the puppet might say, "It sounds like you're feeling sad about mom and dad not being together anymore. That's okay to feel.”

  • Problem-Solving: Puppets can also help children think about solutions or ways to cope. They can help with things like moving to a new house or splitting time between parents, allowing the child to adjust to the new reality

Using puppets to discuss divorce can transform a conversation into a more manageable and gentle process. It allows children to express and navigate feelings in a safe environment. It should be tailored to the child's individual needs and used as just a part of a plan to support their emotional health during the divorce transition.

The goal is to help children understand that it's okay to have feelings about divorce and it is okay to talk about them, whether directly or through a puppet. With the right approach, puppets can be allies in helping children cope with the changes and emotions brought on by divorce.
