Podcast Spotlight: You Are Not Crazy

Most divorce advice assumes two reasonable adults who both want to reach an agreement. Jessica Knight, a Fresh Starts Expert and divorce coach, made her podcast for the people that advice keeps failing.

About the show

You Are Not Crazy is about emotional abuse and coercive control, including what happens when that behavior follows someone through divorce and custody. Jessica alternates between solo episodes and conversations with guests who work in the field.

She named the show after the first thing she needed someone to say to her, before anyone handed her a framework. Each episode takes one confusing behavior and explains how it works: a text that always arrives on a Saturday, say, or an apology that never changes anything. Many listeners are still in the relationship. Many others are co-parenting with someone who never stopped trying to control them.

Where to start

If you're in the middle of a custody case right now, Jessica would hand you "When Co-Parenting Becomes Coercive Control."

It's for the parent who keeps doing everything right and still gets cast as the problem. Jessica walks through counter-parenting and the forced engagement loops that keep you answering message after message. She also shares what staying regulated looked like in her own situation. A lot of parents in custody disputes have been told they simply have a difficult co-parent. This episode gives them a more accurate name for what they're dealing with.

Who it's for

Jessica's listeners are usually trying to explain behavior that sounds minor when they describe it out loud and has been wearing them down for years. If you've started to doubt your own read of what's happening, this show is a good place to hear it described plainly, by someone who has been there.

Where to listen

You Are Not Crazy is on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube, and every episode is on the show's website.
