Falling Leaves and Failing Marriages
Why Autumn Can Bring Marital Problems Into Focus
Summer can provide a temporary escape from almost anything. The sun shines brightly, warm breezes blow, and flowers bloom under blue skies. Schedules become more flexible, children are out of school, families travel, and weekends fill with barbecues and beaches.
Even when a marriage is struggling, the change in routine can make it easier to postpone difficult conversations until after vacation or the start of the school year.
There may also be hope that summer will help. More time together or a family trip might restore the connection. But a change of scenery cannot resolve what has not been addressed. Sometimes arguments follow a couple on vacation, important conversations remain impossible, and the distance between them becomes even more visible.
The Return of the Invisible Load
When fall begins, everyday responsibilities return quickly. School forms, activities, carpools, meals, appointments, bills, and work can expose patterns that were easier to overlook during the summer. If you already carry most of the practical and emotional load, you may realize that you are managing the household, anticipating everyone’s needs, and taking care of the the children without feeling supported by a partner.
At the same time, the holidays are approaching. The thought of more gatherings, financial pressure, family expectations, and pretending everything is fine can feel exhausting. Autumn becomes a turning point because the year is moving forward and the problems that were postponed are now harder to avoid.
There Is No Perfect Time
There will always be another holiday, birthday, school event, or family commitment that makes the timing feel complicated. Waiting may provide temporary relief, but it does not resolve what has been left unaddressed. At the same time, recognizing that something needs to change does not mean you must make an immediate or irreversible decision.
If fall has brought the truth about your marriage into focus, you do not have to carry the uncertainty, fear, and weight of responsibility alone. The first step may simply be gathering information, identifying your priorities, and understanding your options.
If you are unsure what comes next, I am here to help you slow things down, separate facts from fears, and make thoughtful decisions with greater clarity and confidence. You do not need all the answers today. You only need a safe place to begin.
